Join Karen Fraser for an introduction to women’s roles as both producers and consumers of portrait photography in the Meiji era (1868-1912). Fraser uses the examples of Shima Ryū, Hanawa Yoshino, and Tokuriki Sakuko to highlight how family connections were important for women to work in photography during this era. More often, however, women were the subjects of portraits, and Fraser explores how portrait photographs came to symbolize the “new, modern Japan” during this time of remarkably rapid societal change.
